Your Child’s Path to Clearer Vision & Eye Health

Our team understands the importance of clear vision for your child’s success at school and in life. Myopia–commonly known as nearsightedness–is a common refractive error in children, causing distant objects to appear blurry. Myopia is caused by the eye growing longer than normal. It often runs in families, with children of nearsighted parents at higher risk.

In the past, nearsighted children were prescribed glasses or contacts to correct their vision. Now, we prescribe myopia control glasses or contact lenses that not only correct their vision but also slow the irregular growth in your child’s eyes. It’s no longer just about helping your child see more clearly today. A higher myopia prescription raises the risk of certain eye conditions later in life. That means taking action today can protect your child for the long term.

Let us support your child’s vision. Schedule your kid’s eye exam today. We’ll guide you through every step of the way.

Why Might My Child Need Myopia Control?

We are finding that children’s eyes are no longer naturally stopping at low levels of myopia, but rather increasing to moderate or high levels. Higher levels of myopia are associated with greater risk of degenerative eye diseases such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts later in life.

By leaving their eyes to develop without intervention, we might be risking their quality of vision in the future. While that can sound very serious, there’s great news. There are several types of myopia control that can effectively slow the progression.

What We Offer

Myopia control focuses on slowing down your child’s eyes from progressing into higher levels of near-sightedness. This protects their eye health and vision into the future.

During your child’s eye exam, we will go through the different myopia control options and make a treatment plan tailored to what’s best for you and your child.

Together, we can preserve your child’s vision.

MiSight 1-Day are soft contact lenses designed to give your child clear and comfortable vision throughout the day, while also slowing down myopia by 50% to 60%.

The central part of the lens allows for clear vision. The periphery of the lens alters how light is focused on the retina, a process that can help slow myopia progression.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k for short, are hard contact lenses. They’re worn while sleeping and removed in the morning for clear vision throughout the day. They temporarily and reversibly flatten the front surface of the eye (the cornea).

Similarly to MiSight lenses, the central part of the lens provides clear and comfortable vision. The periphery of the lens alters how light is focused on the retina, a process that can help slow myopia progression by 50% to 60%.

Ortho-k allows active kids to participate in sports such as swimming and basketball without having to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day.

We’ll take a noninvasive scan with a device called a corneal topographer to create a precisely fitting lens for your child. We’ll also work with your family to help your child feel confident inserting and removing the lenses and keeping them clean.

We offer both ZEISS MyoCare and Hoya MiyoSmart myopia control glasses. These glasses are designed to give clear central vision while altering how peripheral light is focused on the retina.

Myopia control glasses have had significant advancements in research and are now shown to help slow myopia progression by 50%–60%.

Atropine has been used in the eye care industry for many years. Research shows that 0.01% to 0.05% atropine drops used once a day before bed can slow myopia progression by 50%.

These drops are often used in addition to myopia control glasses or contact lenses so that your child is able to see well throughout the day.

Signs Your Child May Need Myopia Control

It’s not always easy to tell if your child is nearsighted. Younger children especially may not realize they’re not seeing the world the same way everyone else is.

Common signs and symptoms of nearsightedness include:

  • Squinting to see the board at school
  • Sitting too close to the TV or other devices
  • Complaining of sore eyes (eye strain) or headaches
  • Complaining of blurry vision
  • Frustration with schoolwork or reading
  • Avoiding sports or other outdoor activities

Sometimes, a vision problem can mistakenly be attributed to a learning or behavioural condition.

With a comprehensive eye exam, we can measure your child’s prescription. If they are nearsighted, we’ll explain your myopia control options and make a personalized recommendation.

How to Help Protect Your Child’s Vision

In addition to leveraging myopia control, there are several other ways you can help protect and preserve your child’s eyesight and vision health.

For example:

  • Keep up with regular eye exams. We typically recommend eye exams at least once a year for school-age kids, but your child may benefit from more frequent exams.
  • Spend time outside. The Canadian Association of Optometrists states that an increase of 1 hour per day of outdoor time could reduce the occurrence of myopia in kids by 45%.
  • Be aware of near work. “Near work,” such as reading, writing, drawing, and using devices, has been linked to an increased risk of developing myopia.
  • Monitor screen time. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends minimal screen time for younger kids, and encourages frequent screen breaks for older kids and teens.
